What is F1554? F1554 is an ASTM specification for cast in place anchor bolts. It was established to clarify material properties for anchor rods used in concrete. Prior to it’s creation, concrete anchor bolts were most commonly specified using the generic round bar specification A36 or the headed hex bolt specification A307. The F1554 specification also qualifies two grades in addition to grade 36, grade 55 & grade 105. More information on F1554 anchor bolts is below.
F1554 Anchor Bolts
F1554 Anchor bolts conform to the ASTM F1554 specification that covers hooked, headed and threaded anchor rods in three strength grades: 36, 55 and 105. The grade designation corresponds to the yield strength of the round bar. For example, F1554 grade 36 has a minimum yield strength of 36,000 lbs per square inch, grade 55 has 55,000 lbs per square inch yield strength, etc. The AASHTO specification M314 for anchor bolts used in some highway/infrastructure projects is basically identical to the ASTM F1554 specification.
L-shaped vs Straight F1554 Anchors
Straight anchor rods and L-shaped anchor bolts are poured in place and anchor structures to concrete foundations or footings. With an L-shaped anchor the bent end is embedded in poured concrete, and on a straight anchor, one end with a nut and, possibly a washer (typically welded on) is embedded in the concrete. These kinds of anchors are designed to secure any number of structures: light poles, highway structures, large steel building columns, and much more. Grade 36 vs Grade 55 F1554 Anchors
Grades 36 and 55 are most commonly specified for ASTM F1554 anchor bolts, but grade 105 is also requested occasionally. ASTM F1554 grade 36 can be specified to allow welded field correction should the anchor rods be placed incorrectly. F1554 Grade 55 with weldability supplement S1 can also be used in this situation, and therefore, is widely substituted for F1554 grade 36. At Atlantic

Several other ASTM Specifications are sometimes specified for anchor rods. ASTM A36, A193, A307, A354, A449, A572, A588 and A687, although sometimes specified, may not be appropriate, or may be difficult to find.
